Harm Reduction Service – South Tyneside August 4, 2011

The Harm Reduction Service South Tyneside held an Open Morning on Thursday 28th July 2011 to give partner agencies from across the borough the opportunity to visit along with their clients to see first hand the facilities on offer.  It was also aimed to raise awareness of Blood Borne Viruses as the day coincided with World Hepatitis Day.

The morning was well attended with around 30 visitors from a range of agencies including South Tyneside Housing, Substance Misuse Service, PCT, Community Safety Team, Matrix, Huntercombe Centre and NERAF to name but a few.  Visitors were given a guided tour by Harm Reduction staff, offered refreshments and given a ‘goody bag’.  All in all the feedback was extremely positive and some excellent comments were made including “it’s been a pleasure to see the excellent work that goes on at the Harm Reduction Service and the staff clearly know their stuff!”.

The event took several weeks to plan and the staff worked very hard to have the building spick and span.  We’re also looking to name the service and have been encouraging service users to make suggestions – the person suggesting the chosen name will win a £20 Tesco voucher.  Names that have been submitted so far have included The NEST (Needle Exchange South Tyneside), STEP (South Tyneside Exchange Provision) and The Pinns Inn!  We’ll continue to gather names over the coming weeks and hope to make a decision at the end of August, so watch this space!
