Progress 2 Work

What is Progress 2 Work

Progress 2 Work is a government initiative, funded through Job Centre Plus, offering support to individuals to overcome barriers in accessing Training/Education or Employment in the City of Sunderland area.

Who do we work with?

The Progress 2 Work service is aimed at any one claiming job seekers benefit (aged 16-65 years) who may have had problems with drug misuse in the past or are stabilised in treatment and experience barriers to their progression to work.
Why is the service available?
It was identified through the National 10 Year Drug Strategy that individuals with past or present drug misuse problems can have barriers that prevent them from accessing Training/Education or Employment. The Government have fundedt £40 million into the Progress 2 Work scheme to address this need. The funding is made available through Job Centre Plus; the agency responsible for managing the projects.

What types of issues does the Service deal with?

Drug misuser's issues can prove to be very complex, common areas dealt with include:

• Stabilisation of their misuse problems/NECA Core services intervention
• Housing issues
• Benefit issues
• Identification of needs
• Training/Education and Employment
• Money management
• Confidence Building
• Basic Skills needs

What can the service offer the clients?

The service gives the clients the opportunity of one-to-one support from a designated support worker. The clients go through an in-depth assessment, which identifies needs, and compiles a detailed action plan with the worker, which are reviewed every four weeks. The service is also able to make referrals into other services that may assist the individual with their addiction problems, e.g Relapse Prevention, Relaxation, Counselling, Complementary Therapies etc. Once the client has identified a particular area of work, training or education, the support worker will support them to achieve their chosen goal. The service can also offer ongoing support for up to one year after the client has accessed full time employment. Clients currently accessing mainstream provision but at risk of losing their training through drug misuse problems can be referred into the provision and be given the support required to sustain their training placement.
