South Tyneside events and campaigns

Unearthed

27 January - 24 March 2007

An exhibition of work from the Kenny Wright Metal Detecting Project, based at NECA, Cookson House, South Shields.

Participants in this project learnt how to use metal detectors and search for objects that had either been lost or discarded. This exhibition includes finds from those searches and other work inspired by the project.

Searches were made in the local area, particularly along the beach. Finds included coins, ring pulls and scrap metal. Afterwards, members worked with staff in Tyne & Wear Museums to learn how to document these objects. A catalogue and archive has now been created which the group will maintain.

Members also visited museums and heritage sites in the South Tyneside area and have taken part in object handling sessions, looking at artifacts and clothing from the Roman times to present day.

The project has benefited the group's members in many ways. It is therapeutic, educational, provides gentle exercise and helps build confidence. These important factors will assist the participants in remaining or becoming abstinent.
