About the Scheme

Following a review of road traffic law in the late 1980’s, the review committee recommended a long term trial to offer alcohol awareness training to drink drive offenders. It was hoped that such awareness training would substantially reduce the rate of re –offending of convicted drivers.

In 1993 ‘pilot’ schemes were introduced in nineteen court areas across the United Kingdom. The outcome was most favourable, showing a clear reduction in levels of re-offending.

In 1999 the Drink Drive Rehabilitation Scheme was formally adopted and became permanent within all courts throughout the United Kingdom.

Since 1993 NECA has been delivering DDRS courses from its first inception to the present time. Consequently we are able to offer a ‘bespoke’ training package underpinned by 16 years of continuous experience within this specialist field.

By enrolling on a DDRS course you will be equipped with the knowledge and awareness to become more responsible, safer and knowledgeable drivers. While on a more practical level, those who take part in the scheme will receive a reduction in their disqualification of up to 25%, and in many instances receive more favourable insurance premiums.

The consequence of being arrested, charged and convicted of a Drink Driving Offence for most people can be a very personal and traumatic one. The impact of a criminal record and fine, compounded by the loss of a driving licence and possible unemployment holds obvious implications. In addition the domestic complications and upheaval resulting from a driving disqualification are ever present.

If you are offered the opportunity by the court to attend a DDRS course it should not be regarded as an additional punishment, neither should it be viewed as a belief by the court that you have an ‘alcohol’ issue. The course is offered to you by the court as an opportunity to take positive steps to better equip and develop your awareness and responsibility in these matters.
